Dome Valley trial: Two sentenced for roles in vicious attack

Two people who played a part in two kidnappings of a 19-year-old woman have been jailed.

Cameron Hakeke and Michelle Blom were sentenced at the High Court in Auckland on Friday, for their roles in the kidnappings of the woman last April and May.

Hakeke, who was only involved in the first attack in April, was jailed for two years and five months for kidnapping and assault with a weapon, by cutting the victim's hair.

Judge Whata said Hakeke showed no remorse for his offending.

Blom, who was involved in the second attack in May, wept as she was jailed for two years and nine months for one charge of kidnapping. Judge Whata said Blom had showed remorse for her role in the kidnapping, and had called her co-offenders' behaviour "disgusting".

In comparison to their co-accused, the pair played minor roles in the attacks which were mainly carried out by Julie-Ann Torrance and Nicola Jones.

Last month they were found guilty of a raft of charges, including kidnapping, injuring with intent and attempted murder. Torrance was also found guilty of sexually violating the victim.

In the first attack, the victim was assaulted at Hakeke's west Auckland home before being driven past the Bombay Hills by Jones and Torrance. She was left on the roadside and warned not to return to Auckland. Her car and belongings were stolen.

About two weeks later the second, more violent attack took place. The victim was kidnapped near Karangahape Road and driven to Blom's Glen Eden address. She was stripped naked, assaulted with a cricket wicket and sexually violated.

She was held captive in the basement for around 20 hours with no water, before being driven to Dome Valley, north of Auckland, where Wayne Blackett tried to break her neck. He then hit her over the head with a hammer multiple times - as Jones and Torrance laughed and egged him on.

The trio left her to die on the roadside, where she was discovered the following morning by a passerby. She had life-threatening head injuries and spent several weeks in hospital.

Family and friends of the victim packed the court's public gallery as Blom and Hakeke were sentenced.

While no victim impact statements were read to the court, Judge Whata noted the emotional harm the attacks still had on the victim - and the financial cost on her parents who now care for her.

Jones, Torrance and Blackett will be sentenced next month.

CORRECTION: An amendment to this story made on Friday incorrectly implied Cameron Hakeke took part in the second kidnapping, which almost led to the victim's death. He was only convicted for his role in the first. Newshub apologises for the error.
