Homelessness on the rise in New Zealand

The wait list for social housing is on the rise, and the government is spending millions of dollars on putting homeless people up in motels.

New figures show the Government has forked out almost $100,000 per night housing the homeless people in motels.

That’s 8.8 million dollars in the first three months of this year.

It’s a sum more than the Government’s annual budget of 2 million dollars set aside for emergency housing grants.

Lifewise Chief Executive Moira Lawler spoke to Duncan Garner.
