An Auckland family have spotted one of New Zealand's endangered birds in the form of a feijoa hanging in their backyard.

North Shore resident Evelyn Lukis, 33, was collecting fruit from her tree on Thursday when she spotted the small fruit, about the size of a grape.

She posted her discovery on Facebook, hoping to "share some kiwi loving".

Ms Lukis is now considering freezing and selling the special find and donating the money to charity.

A similar shaped feijoa found in 2009 earned another Aucklander $1000 on Trade Me.
