Northland, Thames and Stratford are on a list of 20 areas that will get a 24-hour police presence.

Newshub has learned Police Commissioner Mike Bush will formally announce the areas on Wednesday.

All 20 will be places that don't currently have a 24-hour presence, but the announcement doesn't necessarily mean a police station opened for 24 hours - just a "presence".

The Northland presence will be somewhere between Kaikohe and Kerikeri, with Kaikohe residents recently complaining about an outbreak of violent crime.

Thames residents have also recently been speaking out about their concerns about escalating violent crime.
