A plane has made an emergency landing in Palmerston North after it was diverted from Nelson.

Air New Zealand confirmed the aircraft landed without incident at 4.45pm.

A fire service spokesman said earlier the issue was with the plane's landing gear, which was deemed "unsafe".

Seventy-one people are believed to be on board the flight, which was due to head from Auckland to Nelson.

Flight radar from earlier showed an Air New Zealand plane circling over Auckland Airport.
