Assaulted Papakura man dies

A man has died after an early morning assault in the Auckland suburb of Papakura.

The 60-year-old was knocked unconscious in the attack on Great South Rd at 2:40pm on Saturday morning. There have been reports he was trying to breakup a bar fight, but these are unconfirmed.

He was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition, but has since died from his injuries.

Two people have been arrested for assault, and are being spoken to by police. 

A scene examination is continuing, and police are making further enquiries.

The victim's family is receiving support from police and Victim Support.
