The New Zealand Defence Force has played a key role in shutting down a major heroin operation in the Indian Ocean.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K2 Orion surveillance aircraft spotted a suspect vessel while patrolling the Indian Ocean.

The Kiwi crew then contacted the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Arunta which then intercepted the vessel off the coast of Tanzania on Wednesday and found a heroin stash weighing 250kgs.

Earlier this month, the Orion spotted two vessels in the Indian Ocean that were trafficking 400kg of heroin worth about $220 million bound for Africa and Europe which was then intercepted by a French ship.

The total amount of illegal drugs the NZDF has helped seize is around $400 million in two weeks.
