Desert Road snow cleared, cars freed

Cars stuck on the North Island's notorious Desert Road thanks to snow have been successfully extracted.

"We hit the Desert Road and it was very lightly snowing so we took a couple of pictures and that was all very good," motorist Shelley Easton told Newshub on Saturday.

"We only got a couple of kilometres further down and it got really heavy, it was completely white the whole way. We ended up stopping fully and there would have been 10 cars that had stopped."

NZTA closed the road, part of State Highway 1, shortly before 5pm.

Contractors were called in to clear the road. Some made it out themselves, others had to be towed, police say.

The road remains closed Sunday morning.
