A man in his 20s has spent the night on the run after robbing a bank on Auckland's North Shore.

The man took a small amount of cash from the ANZ on Glenfield Rd around 1pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Local councillor Richard Hills says it came as a shock for the community.

"Everyone's just being vigilant about everything that they see as strange. They know police are doing everything they can," he told Newshub.

"I think they acted pretty fast, and they seem to have covered a lot of ground around area."

The alleged offender is described as being of Maori or Pacific Island descent. He was wearing a white hoodie and sunglasses.

Mr Hills says there was clear communication between police, schools and residents.

"Everyone was able to tell each other what was going on fairly quick and allay fears, especially from parents at the school when there was a lockdown. It's good to see the community in action, as always."
