Student creates epic Māori pronunciation rap video

A Wellington student has created an epic video highlighting the importance of Māori pronunciation.

Michael Johnston wrote and recorded the rap video 'Toe Paw' as part of a class project, which gives a fresh and entertaining take on our bilingual country.

He says the song highlights his own learning journey too.

"I wanted to share my story, learning about Māori culture from a Pākehā point of view."

Mr Johnston says after sharing his tune on Facebook he's had "loads of really positive feedback."

He says it's about time "New Zealand embraces New Zealand".

"I think in New Zealand it's not right not to respect the Māori language. If it was the other way around we'd get upset if words were pronounced wrong."

Mr Johnston says he's already got another musical number in the pipelines.
