Waimate is now 'officially' a town

Waimate is now officially a town according to Facebook.

The town that Facebook forgot now has a place in the world after the social media giant updated their site allowing users to "live" in the South Canterbury location.

The problem lay around Facebook's GeoTagging system which missed the town of around 3000 - but did pick up nearby towns such as Morven which only has a handful of residents.

Freelance web designer Tim O'Brien launched a petition in October last year on behalf of the area in order to get their town on the map.

"There were no options to enable you to accurately display that you were from Waimate," he says.

"It didn't give Waimate people on social media a clear identity."

Mr O'Brien tried to go straight to Facebook, making calls to the United States, but never got through to someone who could help.

He says while they don't know if they can attribute Facebook's new update directly to his petition campaign, he'd like to think they had a big part to play in getting the town on the map.

"It was received quite well, a lot of councillors supporting it, different business people supporting it as well so yeah I think this a great success."

The Waimate District Mayor Craig Rowley agreed, saying it was about time.

"We're a thriving little town down this way and we should be on the map," he says.

"We're right in the centre of everything, there's not many places in the country where you can go fishing in the sea and an hour and a half later you can be skiing up on the mountains."

The Mayor went on to say they also have affordable housing, a very low crime rate and a great community, and thanks to Facebook, they are also now on the map for the world to see.
