Police are investigating the suspicious death of a person near Invercargill's Stadium Southland.

The stadium remains cordoned off after what a stadium spokesperson described as a "major" incident.

It's understood the person was assaulted late on Wednesday night and was taken to hospital but has since died as a result.

Security guards have been posted at the stadium's entrance on Thursday.

A stadium spokesperson told Newshub that the stadium is in a crime scene lockdown and will be for some time.

No staff were involved in the incident and sport was being played at the stadium on Wednesday night but finished at 10:30pm prior to the incident.

Police are asking the public to contact them on 03 211 0400 if they have any information regarding the incident.

In a separate incident, police have also cordoned off a house on Brooke St in the Invercargill suburb of Heidelberg.
