John Banks told to 'own up' to love child

The mother of a man claiming to be John Banks' love child has told the former MP to "own up" to it.

Antony Shaw, 47, has filed proceedings asking a judge to declare Mr Banks as his birth father - possibly making him next of kin.

Mr Shaw's mother Pam Mayes told NZME she and Mr Banks had a relationship in the 1960s after meeting at a party. She said the former Auckland Mayor would be "very silly" to not admit he's the father.

"I think every child has the right to know who their parents are," she told the Herald on Sunday.

Mr Shaw wasn't told Mr Banks was his alleged biological father until 1999.

Mr Banks has not commented on the paternity suit, and nor has Mr Shaw. The next hearing is June 29.
