A 15-year-old has been followed for around 1km while walking in Rolleston, Christchurch, on Monday, the man fleeing after she asked for help from someone.

The girl saw the man, described as Caucasian and in his 40s, following her at around 2:30pm while at the intersection of Brookside Rd and Rolleston Dr.

She crossed the road repeatedly to see if she was being followed, with the man on her tail the whole time.

He fled after she reached Burnham School Rd and asked for help from a member of the public who drove her the rest of the way.

Police are asking anyone who saw the incident or have seen similar suspicious behaviour in the area recently to contact them on (03) 363 5243.

The man was around 185cm tall and was either bald or had very short hair, wearing camouflage-coloured trousers and a camouflage backpack, and a dark grey t-shirt.

"This girl did the right thing by briskly crossing the road to see if she was being followed, before approaching a member of the public and seeking help," Sergeant Grant Stewart said.

"Families are encouraged to talk to their children about any behaviour that makes them feel uncomfortable."
