Team NZ fans gripped with nerves despite being ahead

Despite Monday's dominant display, Team New Zealand supporters are nervous ahead of the next big race.

Four years ago Jimmy Spithill's remarkable comeback began at this exact point, when the Kiwis only had to win one more race.

"It's very intense. I was sweating. My heart was going," one person said after watching Monday's races.

"I felt ill after I got here. Especially after yesterday. I just get really, really nervous," another said.

In 2013, Team New Zealand was in the exact same position - on match point and thinking it was inevitable the cup was coming home.

But that time didn't go to plan.

Fast forward four years and even though the fridge is fully stocked, the champagne is staying on ice, for now.

"I'm quite hesitant to [say I'm confident Team NZ will win], from a supporters point of view the whole of New Zealand is superstitious," Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron general manager Hayden Porter says.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is the home of Team New Zealand and revenge is front of mind and now within reach.

Tonight, fans will dream America's Cup racing will return to the Waitemata Harbour and wake up tomorrow hoping that turns into a reality.

"Some might turn to something stronger than coffee," Mr Porter says.

A thousand people are expected to watch down at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland and while no one is getting ahead of themselves, everyone is hoping the America's Cup is returned to its rightful place, New Zealand.
