A young truck driver is nursing injuries after a group of boy racers set upon him in Auckland late on Friday night.

A video on social media shows a truck clipping a car, and a subsequent assault on the truck driver by a mob.

Truck driver Martin, 21, told NZME he got blocked in by the group while driving through the suburb of Penrose.

He tried to negotiate through a gap but clipped the front of a Honda and dragged it for several meters down the road.

Martin only realised what had happened when some of the street racers chased him down in their cars.

"I had to stop and then people just started crowding round the truck and one guy jumped in the passenger side and started beating me over the head," he said.

A police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub that officers were called to Great South Rd about 12:05am on Saturday after reports of an assault.

She said there were about 30 street racers and their passengers on the scene when they arrived.

"The truck driver has minor injuries and we're currently undertaking inquiries to find the offenders."

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.

Anyone with any information or video footage is urged to contact the Manukau police station on 09 261 1300.

Information may also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
