Closed since April: Locals frustrated as Manawatu Gorge work drags on

A local business-owner says her trade has plummeted nearly 70 percent since the Manawatu Gorge road was closed in April due to slips.

Public meetings will be held in Woodville and Ashurst on Wednesday for the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to update frustrated locals.

Bridge Cafe owner Rebecca Algie is desperate for a decision on an alternative route to be made.

"I think that's something they have to do - to make sure the road goes through the town," Ms Algie told Newshub.

The Manawatu Chamber of Commerce first asked the Government for a long-term solution to the slip-prone highway in 2012. At that point, a slip had closed the road for 14 months.

State Highway 3 through the Manawatu Gorge is closed indefinitely due to the amount of unstable material. The NZTA removed staff from the area due to concerns over safety.
