One person has died and five others have been injured after a car and a ute collided on the Hutt Valley motorway.
The collision, near Silverstream, occurred just before 4am on Sunday morning with one person from the car dying at the scene and another being transported to hospital by helicopter in a critical condition.
Two other people from the car suffered injuries - one serious, one minor - while two people in the ute suffered moderate to minor injuries.
The motorway's northbound lanes remain closed, north of Silverstream.
