Government ups offer to break ChristChurch Cathedral deadlock

The Government has put a new offer on the table to break the deadlock over the quake-damaged ChristChurch Cathedral.

A further $10 million from the Christchurch City council has been added to the Government's proposal for the Cathedral's restoration.

In total, more than $90 million is now available for restoring the Cathedral, which has an estimated price tag of $104 million, according to the Cathedral Working Group Recommendation report.

The new offer comes as the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner insists a decision needs to be made.

"This [is] not about favouring reinstatement over restoration or a contemporary new build," she says.

"It's about finding a way forward that doesn't leave everyone tied up in court for five to 10 years."

So far $90.7 million is on the table:

  • Government contribution: $10 million grant and a $15 million loan that won't need to be repaid if the loan conditions are met
  • Great Christchurch Buildings Trust: $13.7 million
  • Christchurch City council: $10 million
  • Anglican Church insurance pay-out: $42 million

Bishop Victoria Matthews has agreed to take the revised offer to the Anglican Synod meeting in September where a decision on the future of the iconic cathedral is expected.
