A failed Mad Butcher chain store in Christchurch is hoping a Givealittle page will help raise $15,000 for unpaid staff.

The Papanui branch went into liquidation in May. Fifteen staff were made redundant and are owed $15,000 collectively.

However, after a huge revenue shortfall before the store went under, it's unclear whether there will be the money to pay them.

"We do not have the funds to pay the staff who were a really great team and did not deserve to lose their jobs like this," the company's former owner Allan Aitchison says.

"Unfortunately any funds from the business will be taken by the bank to repay debt."

Mr Aitchison set up the Givealittle page hoping to help the staff he calls "normal working folks", who "can't afford" to take a loss.

"[I] have taken it personally that I cannot, and do not, have the funds to pay these people that have become my friends during their time working in the business."

So far only $750 has been raised.
