Three Mongrel Mob members knocked on the wrong door when they ran out of gas at the weekend.

The men had been driving home to Wairoa when they ran out of petrol in Raupunga, a small town affiliated with rival gang Black Power, 35km south of Wairoa in the Hawke's Bay.

Police said the stranded men knocked on the door of an opposing gang member, and an "altercation with the occupants" ensued.

Police said when the Mob members later returned to their vehicle, it had been stolen.

No complaints or charges had been laid and the vehicle was later recovered.

The altercation occurred near the site of an incident in 2015 where three Mongrel Mob members died in a crash after their car plunged off a cliff into the Mohaka River.
