Video captures the moment an Air New Zealand plane made its brave and bold descent into Wellington on Thursday, as severe gales hit the capital.

It was the second attempt that the plane had made, and it was travelling to Wellington from Auckland.

Twitter user Time Lord posted the video, saying "props to the pilots" for their skill.

A number of arrivals and departures were cancelled at Wellington airport on Thursday morning, and flights remain cancelled for smaller planes.

Some planes made numerous failed attempts before they could successfully land, while others were unable to land and had to divert back to their origin.

Thousands of passengers have been affected by the disrupted flights, including Prime Minister Bill English who had to cancel a trip to the Wairarapa on Thursday morning.

Severe gales are expected to continue through to Thursday evening in Wellington, with gusts of up to 130 km/h in exposed places. In the Wellington hills, gusts of up to 150 km/h are expected until Thursday afternoon.
