Burger King is investigating after a South Auckland couple were allegedly given a raw chicken burger.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, told Newshub he and his partner went into the Papatoetoe store on Monday afternoon to try the new chicken sliders, which were released in New Zealand last Tuesday.

But after his partner had taken two bites of her slider, she realised the texture was off.

"When I had a closer look there was like raw chicken goo... it was next level raw," he says.

"I was in disbelief... I thought this can't be right. Straight away I chucked it off my lap and onto the floor."

He says he and his partner "felt really sick", but believes it was "more of a mind thing" rather than food poisoning.

The couple returned to the store to show the manager, who "was in disbelief as well", the man says.

However despite getting a full refund, he claims it took three trips to get the correct refund receipt.

"They accepted it was raw but they were tricky about it.

"The receipt I complained on was for beef slider so it might not even be a valid complaint."

He fears children could have eaten the same burger without noticing.

"South Auckland culture is to go and pick up your kids from school and get a burger.

"I shouldn't have to check my damn burger. My kids wouldn't have known the difference."

A Burger King spokesperson told Newshub they are in contact with the customer "to understand exactly what happened".

"Obviously food safety is our number one priority."

The spokesperson says this is the first time they have received a complaint about the chicken slider, and says the products new-release isn't to blame.

"Preparation-wise it would be similar to other chicken products that we prepare, but until we get the facts it's hard to say what went wrong."

Burger King hopes to verify what happened by the end of the day.
