Auckland is getting ready to mark a public transport milestone.

Mayor Phil Goff will catch a train from Newmarket to Britomart during the Thursday morning rush hour to celebrate the city rail network clocking up a record 20 million passengers trips in one year.

The council says the figure is being passed three years earlier than originally forecast.

It says it's the result of strong investment in the network and commuters finding it more convenient to go by rail than car.

With passenger use increasing, the council in July approved the $207 million purchase of 17 new electric trains to replace diesel units by 2019.
