Police have been unable to pin down a gunman who shot Waikato officers with a military-style semi-automatic weapon.

A police pursuit in Morrinsville ended in gunfire in the early hours of Sunday morning, after one of the car's occupants shot at officers.

A section of Kuranui Rd remains cordoned off with a scene examination underway.

No one was injured the attack, but residents are on edge.

Waikato police District Commander Superintendent Bruce Bird said on Sunday they have apprehended two occupants of the car, but are still seeking the driver, who they believe is the gunman.

"This is quite frightening. It's an attack of an intensity on a police officer that I have not come across in the 40 years of my service."

The other two are said to be assisting police with their inquiries.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly in relation to the vehicle the offenders were driving - a red 2015 Holden Commodore, registration 1AZIF1.
