A Palmerston North man has been arrested for importing methamphetamine into New Zealand.

Officers entered the 40-year-old's house on Tuesday to find a meth lab set up, which they believe was sourced through "the man's contacts in South East Asia", Manuwatu Organised Crime Unit Detective Steve Field says.

It is believed the drugs were "destined for the Palmerston North illicit-drug market".

"This drug destroys families and communities, and the social cost is significant."

Police and Customs worked together to lay the charges of importing a Class A drug, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Further charges may still be laid.

Police urge anyone with information about drug manufacturing or supply rings to contact their local Police station, or to report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
