Constable Elliot, the world's first police guinea pig, has died.
His death was announced on the New Zealand Police's official Facebook page.
"He was a chilled-out, relaxed little fella who would curl up in a ball on your lap like a cat, but was brave enough to face up to bigger animals thinking he was a dog," the police wrote.
"He is greatly missed by his Wellington family, especially his eight and six-year-old humans, who loved to care for, and play with him.
"He will also be missed by his police family, who he enjoyed working for over the last year, spreading prevention messaging about crossing roads, safer driving and avoiding burglaries."
Const Elliott found fame in May, when he donned a uniform and promoted safe driving around schools.
"Remember people, the kids are going to be out and about walking and biking, and crossing roads," the furball 'said'.
"Like me, they are small and unpredictable, so you have to watch out!"
His death was mourned by Kiwis across the country.
"Rip little dude. Life was short but I'm sure full of rewards for helping spread the word and keeping kids safe. Cross the rainbow bridge with pride!" wrote Nicky Loftus.
"I hope his funeral will feature a 21 carrot salute. Rest well, constable," said Natalie Prescott.
"End of shift, Constable Elliot. Stand down," said Cathie Withington.
