A police officer and police dog were hit by a car involved in a police chase in central Invercargill on Friday night.

Police received reports of a car being driven erratically on the Bluff Highway, shortly before midnight. They tried to stop the car, but the driver fled.

Police used road spikes but the car continued for a short time.

"A police officer and police dog were hit when the vehicle came to a stop on Dee St," police said.

A video of the scene was posted on Facebook and appeared to show the officer being pulled from under the car.

Police said the officer had bruising to his leg, and the dog did not suffer any serious injuries.

A 68-year-old man is due to appear in court on Saturday on a range of driving charges.
