A taste of spring is on its way for much of country this weekend and early next week.

MetService says a change in wind direction will bring northerly winds accompanied by warm, summer-like temperatures.

While 30degC days aren't forecast, many regions around the country are set for double digit sunshine with some chances of rain, instead of a wintry cold weekend.

The east coast of both islands are looking to be in the best position to soak in the rays, with 20degC forecast for areas such as Napier and Hastings on Monday.

Cloud over the west coast means they're likely to miss out on the good weather with rain forecast.

Temperatures (highs) across the country on Sunday and Monday:

  • Invercargill 14degC, 15degC
