Aucklanders were treated to a remarkable display of lightning and thunder on Sunday night as a massive storm passed over the city.

There were more than 100 lightning strikes within an hour from 6pm on Sunday night - one of which was caught hitting the city's iconic Sky Tower.

In spectacular footage, New Zealand's tallest building can be seen lighting up as its aerial is struck by a large fork of lightning.

And there could yet be more impressive storms to come for the rest of the country on Monday, according to weather forecasts.
