Renting an apartment in Auckland is now more expensive than a small house, Trade Me says.
Median weekly rents for Auckland apartments hit a record high of $490 per week in August, or $40 more than the average rental for one-or-two bedroom houses, the property listing website found.
Apartments had become popular for a number of reasons, head of property Nigel Jeffries said.
"Urban properties are typically warmer, drier and in a better, inner-city location than your average house," he said.
The preference for apartments, townhouses and units was also taking place in other cities, he said.
Across New Zealand, the median weekly rent for apartments has increased 6.3 per cent in the past three years to a record $460, costing tenants an extra $3900 per year, Trade Me found.
