Police divers have found two bodies and the vehicle that went into a suburban Christchurch lake.

Police say the car is upside down in about six metres of water and a crane will be needed to lift it out.

The bodies are believed to be those of 27-year-old Avneel Ram and his 31-year-old wife Sheetal.

Their car went into the lake at around 5:45pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses say a woman's car revved into the Westlake Reserve shortly before 6pm. A man dived into the deep lake to try and retrieve the woman - but failed to surface.

A large number of family and friends gathered at the Westlake Reserve on Wednesday morning to watch the recovery process.
