Builder's van erupts in flames on west Auckland road

Footage has emerged of the moment a large fire consumed a builder's van on a main road in west Auckland on Tuesday morning.

In the video, filmed by witness Ana Samways, smoke can be seen billowing from the vehicle's roof as drivers gave it a wide berth on their way to work.

Ms Samways was taking her kids to school when she came across the exploded van.

The fire erupted just after 8am this morning - with the scene of the blaze amazingly only about 100 metres from Waiatarua Fire Station, halfway between Titirangi and Piha.

Despite that, witnesses said there was a wait of at least 10 minutes before a fire truck arrived at the scene.

A Fire Service spokesperson said one fire truck was sent, and the blaze was cleared within half an hour of its arrival.

He said the vehicle, described as being a builder's van, was almost certainly written off as a result of the inferno. No one was hurt.

The Fire Service spokesperson refused to comment on what may have caused the fire.
