Friday night was busy night for emergency services around the country, with a number of tragic deaths.

One person died after driving a car into water at a Canterbury beach. The car was submerged in water when emergency services arrived and the driver's body was recovered later that evening.

Another died in a housefire in the Dunedin suburb of Brockville. Fire and Emergency shift manager Riwai Grace told Newshub neighbours were evacuated due to smoke.

A 67-year-old woman was killed by a car near the Northland town of Ohaeawai around 11pm last night.

A fire engulfed an abandoned hospital building in Hokitika overnight. West Coast fire crews were alerted to the Seaview Hospital site near the airport just before 1am.

It took an hour to bring the fire under control. A fire spokesman has confirmed no one was inside at the time and the cause of the blaze is not yet known.
