New Zealand voted third most beautiful country in the world

New Zealand has beaten nations including Iceland, Slovenia and Indonesia to achieve third place in the Rough Guide list of most beautiful countries. 

Rough Guide, producers of travel guides and holiday advice, has compiled the list based upon feedback from their readers.

Voted for by readers, the list celebrates the likes of "rolling countryside, isolated islands or soaring mountain peaks" and featured several impressive destinations. 

In third place, New Zealand is described as being filled with "rolling green hills, majestic mountains, breath-taking fjords and amazing diversity of landscape from one island to the next".

The top five is as follows:

  1. Scotland
  2. Canada
  3. New Zealand
  4. Italy
  5. South Africa

Canada received second place for its beautiful landscapes as well as being home to "lumberjacks, beavers and maple syrup", while the top spot went to Scotland for its history, wild beaches and deep lochs.

Outside of the top five, the other featured countries included Vietnam, Norway, India and the United States of America. 

Australia did not feature in the list.
