A man has lost his licence after being caught driving almost 170km/h on the Waikato Expressway.

His reason? It stops his car making a strange noise, he told officers.

Stuff reports the 28-year-old was clocked at 166km/h at Horotiu, just south of Ngaruawahia, on Friday afternoon.

"My car makes a noise and if I travel at over 140 it doesn't make that noise anymore," he reportedly told police.

Police told him he should see a mechanic if his car's making a funny noise, not drive at 70km/h above the speed limit.

"If anything goes wrong with it at that speed, it's history," said Sgt Neil Mansill.

He lost his licence for 28 days and has been charged with dangerous driving, Stuff reports.

The speed limit on the Waikato Expressway will soon be increased - but only to 110km/h.
