A car went off the road and rolled down a steep bank in south Taranaki on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene off Waitotara Valley Rd around 4:20am Sunday.

A female passenger suffered suspected head and spinal injuries. She was stabilised at the scene before being airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

Police originally said the car fell off a cliff into the Waitotara River; however, it is now understood the car rolled down the bank.

Police say the driver has minor injuries.
