Earthquake strikes near Kaikōura

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Kaikōura has rattled central New Zealand.

The quake struck at around 5:10pm on Sunday, centred 10km west of the town and around 13km deep.

More than 1000 people across central New Zealand have reported feeling shaking, including dozens who felt strong shaking.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, Fire and Emergency NZ said.

The quake has been described as "rolling" and "wobbly" on Twitter.

The town is still recovering nearly a year on from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which struck just after midnight on November 14, 2016.
