A Kaikōura restaurateur is appealing to bach owners to consider renting to families struggling to find accommodation in the town.

Coopers Catch owner Jason Hill says it's a major problem, because landlords can get more renting rooms to roading workers in the quake-recovering town.

"It's good that there's being money injected into the economy, but then there's the other side of it," he says.

He says there are long waiting lists for rentals and the situation is forcing people to leave the town they love.

"We've got one girl that's just resigned. She's born and bred here. She lost her home in the earthquake. The house she's renting has just been sold - they're going to rent it to workers," he says.

He fears the accommodation squeeze in Kaikōura will leave businesses high and dry for staff over the tourist season.
