Police are searching a stolen car for a passenger after it was driven into a river near Nelson on Saturday afternoon.
Officers found the car in the Maitai River at around 4pm. One of the occupants fled the scene but was tracked down by a police dog soon after.
The other occupant has not been found and police say there "is a possibility that person is in the water".
Swift Water Rescue has been called to the scene, and a number of police are in the area.
