Rare white-feathered kiwi hatches in Rotorua

A kiwi chick has hatched in Rotorua - but this one looks a little bit different.

Bloomers is the newest addition to the Rainbow Springs Nature Park. He was given his name because of a sprouted puff of white plumage around his legs.

Bloomers is the first chick at the hatchery in a decade to have the colourings.

A video posted to YouTube shows a member of the park stuff cuddling the tiny bird.

"This is an extra-special one, because this chick here has white feathers just around the top of the white leg, so we've affectionately named this chick Bloomers," she says.
