A shooter is at large after a woman was killed in Greymouth on Sunday afternoon.
Police say the attacker may have been known to the victim, who was shot and killed just after 4pm, but haven't been able to confirm that.
"Based on what we know at this time it is thought that the offender may have travelled from the address with an associate, and could still be armed," Inspector Mel Aitken, area commander of the West Coast, said in a statement.
Police urge anyone who sees anybody acting suspicious to call 111 and not approach.
