A woman has been sentenced to 11 months home detention for the manslaughter of her husband six years ago.

Susan Mouat admitted to pushing her husband Bruce down a small flight of concrete steps at their South Taranaki home in the early hours of July 16, 2011.

Mr Mouat, who was drunk, hit his head as he fell backwards and died in hospital 11 days later.

Mouat was sentenced in the High Court in New Plymouth on Friday morning.

Police initially investigated the possibility his death was a homicide but a coroner later ruled it an accident.

Susan Mouat gave an updated statement to police in 2014 which lead to a manslaughter charge being laid in November last year.

She pleaded guilty in September of this year.

Mr Mouat worked as a machine operator for Fonterra and was also a volunteer with the Taranaki Alpine Rescue Club.
