Auckland Council is pushing to increase savings, as it identifies areas where budgets can be slashed.
The council believes it can save nearly $400m from its budget over the next 10 years.
A report identified the savings, most of which would come through integrating storm water, fresh water and waste water management.
"That means we have a joined-up approach, it's more effective, we have much more sway in terms of our procurement, it's cheaper to do maintenance," said Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.
"There's a lot of work to be done, but that is a saving that I'll be pushing to realise."
Mayor Goff also hopes to cut costs in waste management and communications, where the council could make redundancies.
