WeatherWatch is warning Kiwis to expect a slightly lengthened Guy Fawkes period as wet weather rolls in for bonfire night.

Kiwis celebrating Guy Fawkes tonight can expect rain and cloud across the country, and the traditional Guy Fawkes Night of November 5 isn't looking any better.

WeatherWatch says some areas may be unaffected by bad weather, but the entire west coast and parts of Southland, Otago, Waitomo, Waikato and Lake Taupo can expect to get wet.

Wellington and Canterbury don't escape the bad weather, with wind forecast to hit on Sunday.

Monday night is expected to be driest nationwide due to a high pressure spreading across multiple regions.

Forecasters say you might want to put off lighting fireworks until Monday evening due to the more acceptable weather forecast.
