Netsafe has unleashed a new weapon against cyber-crime in the form of the Re: scam online artificial intelligence.
The artificial intelligence programme works by engaging in conversation with scammers, distracting them and wasting their time so they cannot move on to another victim.
"All you've got to do is forward on the email to email@example.com and then the machine will strip off your email address and engage with that scammer on your behalf and then later give you an update as to how it went," said Netsafe CEO Martin Cocker.
"The robot takes on one of its many personalities and engages with the scammers providing just enough information to keep the exchange going and keep the scammers busy."
