How to keep your dog calm on Guy Fawkes

  • 01/11/2017

With Guy Fawkes approaching on Saturday, pet owners may be nervous about their animals being spooked by the loud noises of fireworks.

Dog behaviourist Mark Vette believes that the sale of fireworks in New Zealand should be banned, but there are a few ways to help calm nervous pets, before they get too anxious.

"Keeping them inside, closing the curtains, radio on, maybe TV on, trying to buffer the sound of that external noise," he said.

"Pop [them] into your bed if they're bad, and get a sedative or anti-anxiety drug.

"Having grown up with Guy Fawkes myself of course it's tough to let it go, but 20-30 percent of these guys suffer badly."
