New Zealand fails to make world's best beaches list

New Zealand has failed to make the cut for a global list of top beaches.

It loses out to 50 pristine international beaches, including four from Australia, in Flight Network's best beaches list.

Muri Beach and One Foot Island in the Cook Islands are on the list, and so is Fiji's Blue Lagoon.

The list was created based on the opinions of over 600 travel journalists, editors, bloggers and agencies from around the world.

The beaches were ranked in five areas: sheer untouched beauty, remoteness, sand and water quality, annual days of sunshine and average annual temperature.

Grace Bay in Turks and Caicos was crowned the world's best beach.

"The protective and remarkably colorful barrier reef, which sits 1.6 kilometres off the shore, keeps the ocean swells at bay, making Grace Bay one of the most ideal places to soak in warm Atlantic waters," its description reads.

"Swimmers enjoy consistent plush sands without the annoyance of rocks, seaweed or pollution. Those looking for a truly unforgettable underwater adventure can take the short boat ride to the barrier reef just minutes away. With sunny skies roughly 319 days a year, this island opens its welcoming arms to visitors year round with delicious sands that wrap you in luxury and clearest waters that beckon you to dive in."
