Police warn rugby league fans before World Cup semi-final

Police are issuing a strong warning to rugby league fans ahead of the World Cup semi-final on Saturday night.

Officers have been forced to deal with increased violence in south Auckland after matches in recent weeks.

Police say they'll be out in full force on Saturday around the match between Tonga and England at Mt Smart Stadium.

Tongan community leader 'Ana Tu'inukuafe says people are excited Tonga's team has succeeded so well and encourages the community to enjoy the occasion.

"Enjoy, have fun and remember who we are as a people," she says.

The match is now sold out, with more than over 30,000 seats filled. It will be the largest rugby league attendance at a match in New Zealand in five years.

More than 70 people have been arrested on the streets since the World Cup started. Police say two officers have been assaulted, including one female officer hit from behind and knocked unconscious.

There are also concerns about traffic, with disruption on the streets of Otahuhu, and detours will be in place on Saturday night.

Police say most fans have been well-behaved, but they will be policing with zero tolerance.
