Saving a life 'doesn't cost anything'

An event to help bring down the country's high suicide rate will be held on Wellington's waterfront on Saturday.

The 365 Initiative is about simple day-to-day actions that can impact someone's life in a positive way.

Co-founder Warren Brown says it is the little things that count.

"The difference you can make by just spending time with people, being kind to people, smiling at people, just generally being a good person - it doesn't cost anything."

The event at Odlins Plaza starts at 10am.

"By doing something during the day, you can make a difference to someone's life."

Latest figures show 606 New Zealanders have taken their own life since July 2016.

If you wish to talk to someone about mental illness or domestic violence, you can call Lifeline on 0800 543 354, the Depression Helpline on 0800 111 757 or the National Telehealth Service on 1737.
